Veterinary Ultrasound Offers Live View of Joints, Organs & the Heart

Photo

Crescenta Valley Veterinary Hospital offers the extraordinary imaging technology found with ultrasound. Ultrasound gives a noninvasive, much more detailed way to look at fluid-filled and soft tissue organs in the body.

It is an additional tool to help us diagnose diseases of the abdomen such as liver, kidney, intestinal diseases, and cancer, as well as heart diseases. With ultrasound, we can see inside these organs, perform ultrasound guided aspirates and biopsies, and often avoid invasive exploratory surgery.

How Does Veterinary Ultrasound Work?

Ultrasound images or sonograms are created using a small, hand-held probe called a transducer. The transducer is placed on the patient, usually aided by a topical gel, and moved across the surface of the skin. A “live” view of the patient’s insides is then visible on a screen. The transducer may be moved around for viewing various angles, and snapshots of specific views can be produced.

This live view allows us to observe a joint in motion and from various angles. Observing the functioning of the patient’s beating heart is even possible with this technology. This is quite different from an X-ray, where only a still photo is produced. Ultrasound produces no radiation as in X-ray technology. As such, it is often preferred for pregnant patients as it is harmless to the fetus.

This technology may also be used in guiding the veterinarian when performing delicate procedures such as biopsies or fluid drainage. Ultrasound technology is virtually painless for the patient, too, a true advantage when dealing with a frightened, traumatized, or uncomfortable animal.
