What Is an EKG?
An electrocardiogram is also called an EKG or ECG. It is a simple test that records the electrical activity of the heart, used to detect and locate the source of heart problems. An EKG shows how fast the heart is beating, if the rhythm is steady or irregular, and the strength and timing of the electrical signals as they pass through each part of the heart.
EKGs are used to evaluate signs and symptoms that could indicate heart problems. Many heart diseases change the electrical signature of the heart in distinct ways, and EKG recordings can help reveal these problems.
How Does EKG Work?
To record the electric signals in the heart, special electrodes are placed on the patient’s skin. A machine creates a record of them on graph paper or displays them on a screen. An EKG is painless and harmless and takes only a few minutes to complete.
Uses for EKG
An EKG can detect problems such as lack of blood flow to the heart, irregular heartbeat, and defects in the valves or chambers of the heart. We can use EKGs to monitor patients during surgery or to track the success of heart treatments.
